Playlist for intelligent extraterrestrial life
A gold-plated copper gramophone record is carried on the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. The Voyager Golden Records include music selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. The recordings are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find them. The Voyager spacecraft do not have a specific destination, and will not come close to any identified star for 40,000 years. NASA's playlist for intelligent extraterrestial life is here, Neil Armstrong's Apollo mission playlist is here.

Re: Has there ever been a commercial release of what was on the Voyager Discs? Barring copyright, this would make a fabulous CD, or download.

But, here is an interesting piece of synchronicity. I am currently working on some pilot programmes for webcasting via Future Radio titled Chance Music.
The playlist for the programmes is going to be created by the shuffle function on my iPod, with no changes allowed. Which means the programmes are going to sound very much like the tracklisting on the Voyager discs.
Should be an interesting experiment. I'll keep readers posted.
Re. Chance music
Heh! I should send you similar from my iPod. Or even the version on the MacBook that mixes it up on iTunes!

David, that opens up another programme option. Presenting a shuffle selection from someone else's iPod .....
