There is a crucial missing link here: The Mster Musicians, about 20 of them, toured some small venues in the UK in the late 1970s (!978 or 79). The visit was organised by Rikki Steen, who called me about them appearing in the Courtyard at Dartington Hall, where I was working at the time. They played an extraodinary set for a tiny audience, that included Michael Eavis who had come over with a view to them appearing at Glastonbury. A party was thrown for them by cameraman (and Muslim convert, friend of Richard Thompson during his Islam phase). Sheep were slaughtered, to Stuart's surprise, and the musicians jammed until the small hours in his farmhouse at Rill. Bliss. My wife Caroline and I were entranced by the music and we followed them - with our children Leo and Chloe, to Plymouth, where they appeared on the Hoe - and cured me of a bad case of flu and a temperature of 100F. I was able to verify the incredible healing power of those raïtas. They jammed backstage with Rolf Harris (the Aussie Tv personality outed during the #MeToo campaign) on the digeridoo. We then moved to Port Eliot, and they played at Perry (Lord)Eliot's country house, out of doors. We danced like crazy. The last time I saw them on that tour, was at the house of a very rich Knightsbridge enthusiast, a place done up like a riad. A couple of years later, inspired by this music, Peter Gabriel and I came up with the idea for WOMAD, and I invited Rikki Steen to advise us. He contributed the Lion of Ali symbol for the festival, a symbol that is still used, although its connection with the Shia religion is rarely mentioned or even known. As for the music of Jajouka, it changed me forever.Bristolsoulmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17785662061249108802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-67041866633979086892020-03-22T23:41:26.289+00:002020-03-22T23:41:26.289+00:00We Thank Stephen Davis for all he does to help The...We Thank Stephen Davis for all he does to help The Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar.Look for our next album coming.Bachir AttarUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08666487977404829682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-77550858870703405022020-03-22T23:40:31.279+00:002020-03-22T23:40:31.279+00:00We Thank Stephen Davis for all he does for Bachir ...We Thank Stephen Davis for all he does for Bachir Attar and The Master Musicians of Jajouka.Bachir.

Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08666487977404829682noreply@blogger.com
