Bob: Your post on the Jazz Meets ...Email received:

Bob: Your post on the Jazz Meets India CD reminded me of the Baroque Jazz Trio’s self-titled LP that came out in 1970 on Saravah (Art Ensemble’s, Brigitte Fontaine’s, and Barney Wilen’s label) and was reissued in 2004 by Harmonia Mundi (but was a L’Arome Production, which is appears to be a “world” independent) . Are you familiar with it? BJT is a fusion (in the best sense of the word) of classical, jazz , Indian (and other "world" musics), psychedelic, and funk. It was rediscovered by French DJs in the late 90s; unfortunately it enjoys greater cachet in the dance world than in jazz (and was a victim of abysmally lazy/inaccurate comparisons upon its original release).

The BJT consisted of Jean-Charles Capon (cello) , Georges Rabol (harpsichord)and Philippe Combelle (percussion, primarily drums and tabla). I don’t know who played sitar or flute, among other instruments. Boomkat’s review states: “[T]he most distinctive and surprising instrument in all this has to be the harpsichord - which is presumably where the 'Baroque' part of the band's name comes from. The combination of slick, bluesy figures, solid funk drums and those jarringly metallic keys evokes an imaginary face-off between DJ Shadow and Henry Purcell.” http://boomkat.com/vinyl/138172-baroque-jazz-trio-baroque-jazz-trio. I think Scott Ross and Charles Lloyd would approve. Its DJ/dance rediscovery also offers nice symmetry with your paths about reaching younger audiences, amplification, and (for lack of a better/more accurate term) the new dynamics of listening: I can’t imagine the DJs sampling/playing this without emphasizing volume and bass lines.

Orgy in Rhythm offers a nice post: http://orgyinrhythm.blogspot.com/2006/05/baroque-jazz-trio.html and YouTube has an edit (that’s not really representative of world vibe as it favors the funk): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATP_tU2nRJ8&feature=youtube_gdata_player.

I own it on vinyl (sounds great, but the packaging is minimal). Amazon UK has a few used/marked-up copies: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bjt-Baroque-Jazz-Trio/dp/B0009JR74Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292532490&sr=1-1

I apologize if this is all old news to you (or if the BJQ does nothing for you). Thanks for the excellent JMI post – looking forward to hearing the whole CD – MPS was such a killer label! Which is what clearly happened on this one.

I meant that the other CD which reminded me of Philip Glass' words was, by contrast, Jazz Meets India. But my wording did not make that clear, so I have now amended it.

Thanks for pointing out the poor signposting.
