The Medinah Temple also presented the Shriner's Circus from time to time.

A google (or other) search of "medinah temple chicago" and "medinah temple chicago circus" will bring up some links, and CSO historians might be able to provide more detail.

A major renovation in the 1990's turned Orchestra Hall into Symphony Center in Chicago, improving the acoustics greatly. And commercial development turned the Medinah Temple into a branch of Bloomingdale's.Jacquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02374496116661609920noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-21633559922558042422009-02-05T21:31:00.000+00:002009-02-05T21:31:00.000+00:00Commenter, thanks for that. I'm very embarassed to admit that not only do I have a CD set with Valery Poliansky and the Russian State Symphony Cappella in my collection, but I have actually written about it on the path.

The 3 CD set (2 CDs feature Poliansky and his Cappella) is of Sergei Rachmaninov's sacred choral music is on Brilliant Classics at super-budget price.

It slipped through my search of almost 1000 Overgrown Path articles because it uses the alternative spelling of Polyansky.

Although the Brilliant Classics box contains texts there is no biography of Valery Poliansky/Polyansky.

Read more here -

http://www.overgrownpath.com/2006/09/brilliant-russian-sacred-choral-music.htmlPliablehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-90378469785506692492009-02-05T20:39:00.000+00:002009-02-05T20:39:00.000+00:00I don't have any more biographical information on ...I don't have any more biographical information on Valeri Polianski, but to judge by a recording of the Rachmaninov Vespers (on Le Chant du Monde, LDC 278 845) he was/is a splendid choral conductor. This recording is with the USSR Chamber Choir with Irina Arkhipova and Victor Roumianev as the soprano and tenor soloists. Well worth seeking out - it seems to be currently unavailable commercially.commenterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03050018892438879929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-52137294303377481032009-02-05T19:14:00.000+00:002009-02-05T19:14:00.000+00:00Predictable, oh so predictable -'But after that em...Predictable, oh so predictable -

'But after that emotional performance why change the mood so dramatically with a Britten encore?'

http://new.edp24.co.uk/content/WhatsOn/story.aspx?brand=EDPOnline&category=WhatsOnReviews&tBrand=EDPOnline&tCategory=WhatsOnReviews&itemid=NOED05%20Feb%202009%2011%3A36%3A52%3A937Pliablehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-79899097649091381452009-02-05T17:07:00.000+00:002009-02-05T17:07:00.000+00:00The piano soloist on the tour is the conductor's d...The piano soloist on the tour is the conductor's daughter, Tatiana Polyanskaya.

http://www.leedsliveitloveit.com/Visitors/Whatson/Eventdetail/tabid/191/ItemId/7151/Default.aspxPliablehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-75819916582130374822009-02-05T16:54:00.000+00:002009-02-05T16:54:00.000+00:00My innocent ears prompted me to listen today to Lo...My innocent ears prompted me to listen today to Lorin Maazel's set of the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies made with the Vienna Philharmonic for Decca in the 1960s.

I am not a great fan of Maazel's music making and have few of his recordings. But this set is quite wonderful, and the sound from the Sofiensaal, Vienna is glorious. I have an early budget CD issue of the set. The recordings have been through many release formats. If you don't have them and find the set snap it up immediately.

Other blogs are making much today of the rumoured 'death' of the Decca label. It is a non-story for me. Decca's heart stopped beating eleven years ago when it was bought by Universal Music.Pliablehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.com
