Why wasn't there a live relay on Radio 3?

I have a stack of the magazine Opera from the late 80's/early 90's that I keep for reference and the articles in the front. In the pink pages in the middle that contained the live listings for the UK and the world for the month, "We Hear That..." and the radio schedules, there were live relays all the time. Now...the BBC does the Met during their season or plays CD's. Yes, rights issues and cost, but still.

I used to drool over the thought that someone taped things like Schreker's Das Spielwerk und die Prinzessin from Wuppertal, but now, it's just sad; mediocre casts singing Il Barbiere da Sevilla, sure, no problem, a major premiere by a major composer last night and....nothing.Henry Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15871451112170286316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-55235628402905529842008-04-16T00:51:00.000+01:002008-04-16T00:51:00.000+01:00I'm pretty sure it's '72. I can't exactly recall, but I think Max wasn't wearing his hair like that in '83.Rodney Listerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16485567377686864129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-74424380247612732262008-04-14T21:07:00.000+01:002008-04-14T21:07:00.000+01:00Nice link here:http://frombeyondthestave.blogspot....Nice link here:

http://frombeyondthestave.blogspot.com/2008/04/rubbra-on-future-radio.htmlPliablehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-56400373319692146992008-04-14T19:30:00.000+01:002008-04-14T19:30:00.000+01:00Jonathan, the caption says it was 1983. But as you...Jonathan, the caption says it was 1983. But as you were there I would say on the balance of probabilities it is 1972.

Any other views?Pliablehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-11915688830399090452008-04-14T19:29:00.000+01:002008-04-14T19:29:00.000+01:00Email received:Subject: RE: Max Taverner photoAre ...Email received:

Subject: RE: Max Taverner photo

Are you sure that photo (top of right side-bar) is from the 1983 production? I reckon Max, and Ted Downes, look too young, and I'm sure it's from the 1972 production.

(Personal connections: I saw the 72 production as a 19-year old fan, both of Max's music and of Munrow's Early Music Consort, who formed the onstage band of period instruments. And in 83, I was a member of that onstage band - then appearing as the Medieval Ensemble of London, though including at least one member, Roger Brenner on alto sackbut, who'd played in 72).

Keep up the good work on OAOP. I'm a dipper-in rather than a regular reader, but I can never avoid being sucked in and spending far more time following fascinating links than I really ought to...

JonathanPliablehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.com
