I have to confess that I have not used this approach when I am actually trying to persuade people to come to a concert, but maybe I should. <br /><br />As an audience member or record buyer I would be rather dismayed if I read disparaging remarks about the composer and/or his works in the programme or cover notes: what’s the point of performing music if you are not passionate about it, and if you do find yourself in that position, at least don’t spoil the audience’s enjoyment by voicing your feelings.<br /> <br />Artists’ biographies, though – there you have something. There is a sort of inverse proportions rule – the less distinguished the artist, the longer the biography will be, with the choir/orchestra totally (who have put in most of the work and promoted the concert) eclipsed in the process. Judged by that rule I am exceptionally distinguished, as I never include a biography, but some cynic will only point out that this is because my highest musical qualification is Grade 2 piano, 50 years ago, and I thus have little to boast about.
