The overall quality of the image might allow for some doubts on its purity, but my bet is that, if anyone manipulated it, it was probably some Soviet editor or publisher with a precarious aesthetic sense.

Let us not forget that the Soviets were particularly talented at manipulating photos. Anyone who has doubts can take a look at "The Commissar Vanishes," the book and the website.

Sorry to move away from the main subject of the article, Pliable, but your comment had made me curious.

Konrad, good question, and I may well be wrong. Th...

Konrad, good question, and I may well be wrong.

There are two reasons for the Photoshop qualification. First, the available images of Shostakovich and other 20th century composers are limited, and the same ones appear on many sites, but this one doesn’t. Secondly, the background and colours have a ‘manipulated’ feel, which may just be due to the way it is parsed when someone resized it. I put the Photoshop qualification on it because I didn’t want to mislead anyone into claiming it was an original image.

If you know anything about the provenance of that image more do let me know. And congratulations on reading the small print – it makes it all worthwhile!

Pliable,Why do you think the Shostakovich image wa...

Pliable,

Why do you think the Shostakovich image was manipulated in Photoshop?
