I just read 'Moondust'...This is such a great story! I just read 'Moondust' myself and as a theremin fan, picked up on the same issue. A couple of corrections, or suggestions. Albert Glinsky's bio of Theremin, which you cite, makes it clear that the reason Theremin went to the US was not because "America won the ideological struggle" (he was a convinced socialist and in fact joined the Communist party shortly before he died) but because he was sent there to spy for the GRU (Soviet military intelligence). He was not kidnapped and taken back to the Soviet Union, but returned voluntarily, abandoning his wife and infant daughter in the US. Your account rather underplays the faustian nature of Theremin's relationship with the Soviet authorities. The 'true' version is, if anything, even more weirdly ironic than yours.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-1143702087030870362006-03-30T08:01:00.000+01:002006-03-30T08:01:00.000+01:00Anon, this link will take you to the Overgrown Pat...Anon, this link will take you to the Overgrown Path story on the Voyager golden record.Pliablehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10616598845886342325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-1143669967233975692006-03-29T23:06:00.000+01:002006-03-29T23:06:00.000+01:00Anon, I believe you're referring to the "Golden Re...Anon, I believe you're referring to the "Golden Record" launced on the Voyager satellite in 1977 (well after the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.)

The Golden Record story is another intriguing one (its contents would make one hell of an iPod playlist...)

As ususal, wikipedia is a good place to start for more info:

Voyager Golden RecordAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060605.post-1143643898022613432006-03-29T15:51:00.000+01:002006-03-29T15:51:00.000+01:00Fascinating stuff... but wasn't there music by J.S...Fascinating stuff... but wasn't there music by J.S.
