I think the closest parallel with Arnold's ninth symphony is actually Tchaikovsky's sixth - the 'Pathetique' - which, of course, was his last symphony also
- especially the last movement in both symphonies, They inhabit a similar emotional world - of valediction, despair and resignation...

I have just bought the naxos recoring of the complete symphonies and am feeling utterly overwhelmed by the sheer range and depth of this great but sadly neglected composer.
The ninth symphony is without doubt one of the great masterworks of the twentieth century. l have seldom felt so moved. Here is a composer pouring out his heart.
l feel deeply angered and saddened by the lack of response to such a great work of genius.It is difficult to understand how this profound and moving work should be so neglected.
Surely it is time now to recognise in Arnold one of the greatest musical voices of the twentieth century.

I hadn't noticed that it's so long since an Arnold symphony has been played at the Proms. It's a glaring omission. You've inspired me to listen to my recording of the 9th (Naxos) again.
