A voice and message so beautiful

Phil Ochs - a voice and message so beautiful that the CIA couldn't let it continue.
Comment left by Jonathan Holloway on my Facebook link to Protest Music. While on this thread it is worth remembering that Elliott Carter’s music was championed in Europe in the 1950s by the CIA funded American Congress for Cultural Freedom and the CIA was also heavily involved in the development of LSD with André Previn among the experimenters. And staying with unlikely alliances, if Benjamin Britten and Pete Seeger sounds improbable follow this path.

Indeed!
A couple of my photos of Greenwich Village in the 60s are in the movie.

Phil is one of those long forgotten heros of the 60's. I'm seriously glad that this new film might renew interest in him and his music.
Phil Ochs was great, but he was an alcoholic who drank himself to death. His Bi=Polar condition was only exacerbated by his drinking.I think its important to remember that fact, also. yes, the Feds had a telephone book worth of files on him, yes they harassed him, but that, though it did not help,is not what killed him.It was booze... His sweet hopeful songs, from draft dodger rag to the power and the Glory are gorgeous,Love me Im a liberal I still find myself singing out loud. The Richard nixon ballad is the best nixon song I ever heard. It is tragic that his soul was so tortured, decimated by booze and fear.A good sweet man, gone far too soon, playing duets with Victor Jara somewhere,I reckon.
